Municipalities in the Galicia region of Spain are implementing various waste management and recycling initiatives to improve sustainability and reduce costs.

In the Pontevedra region, Tomiño launched a door-to-door biowaste collection service for specific producers under the ‘Grilo Verde’ model. In Pontevedra, the historic center transitioned to a system of mobile ‘emerging islands’ managed by PreZero to collect five types of recyclables. Redondela has also introduced a mobile recycling station for high-traffic events, featuring separate collectors for paper, cardboard, glass, light packaging, plastics, and residual waste to prevent mixed waste accumulation.

In Nigrán, a new ten-year, 29.7 million euro waste collection contract with Prezero has commenced. This includes a 3.4 million euro initial investment to renew equipment, increase container numbers by 20%, and introduce a new vehicle fleet. As part of this rollout, 250 specialized containers for organic matter and glass are being distributed to schools and businesses.

Other municipalities are reporting specific performance and educational metrics. Salvaterra de Miño reported stable recycling efficiency for the first seven months of 2026, managing over 80,000 kilograms in yellow containers and 94,000 kilograms of paper and cardboard. The municipality’s error rate in yellow containers is 29.3%, which is lower than the regional average of approximately 35%. In Mos, authorities have scheduled an informative session for October 19 to educate the public, hospitality businesses, and retailers on the proper use of brown containers and organic waste separation, supported by the Xunta de Galicia and European funds.
