Sources: 3. Developments: 2. The city of Crotone is experiencing a public health and environmental crisis involving contaminated drinking water and sewage leaks. Following analytical results from the Provincial Health Agency (ASP) indicating that water samples failed to meet regulatory standards, Mayor Vincenzo Voce issued an emergency ordinance suspending municipal water consumption in four specific areas, including Piazza Mazzini and Piazza Immacolata. The water utility, SoriCal SpA, was ordered to suspend distribution and conduct technical assessments to identify the source of contamination. As the situation progressed, reports emerged of a simultaneous sewage emergency in the Papanice district, where foul-smelling sewage has been flooding streets for approximately ten days. This overflow has created environmental risks and potential soil instability. Tensions have risen as local residents and community leaders expressed frustration over delayed repairs, citing a jurisdictional dispute between the municipality and SoriCal. A local citizens' committee has announced intentions to file a formal complaint with the Prosecutor's Office. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-26: Crotone faces sewage floods and contaminated drinking water Crotone faces a public health crisis as sewage floods the Papanice district and drinking water in several public fountains is declared contaminated, prompting a temporary usage ban. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/crotone-faces-sewage-floods-and-contaminated-drinking-water ### 2026-09-24: Crotone bans municipal water consumption in four areas due to health risks Crotone authorities have banned the consumption of municipal water in four locations, including Piazza Mazzini and Via Giovanni Paolo II, following reports of non-compliant water quality posing health risks. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/crotone-bans-municipal-water-consumption-in-four-areas-due-to-health-risks --- Cite as: Water contamination and sewage crisis in Crotone.
