Initially, Rooney criticized the team following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, labeling players as “selfish” and accusing them of prioritizing themselves over the club. He specifically targeted captain Bruno Fernandes for criticizing manager Michael Carrick’s tactics and suggested that comments from defender Lisandro Martínez contributed to dressing room instability. Rooney compared the players to “babies” who “throw their toys out of the pram.” Following a subsequent 0-3 loss to Bournemouth—marking the club’s eighth consecutive match without a victory—Rooney expressed further frustration over a perceived lack of passion and defensive effort. He questioned if the roster understands the significance of representing the club and stated he would want to demand accountability directly in the dressing room. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-27: Wayne Rooney criticizes Manchester United players after Bournemouth defeat Wayne Rooney has heavily criticized Manchester United players for a lack of passion and effort following a 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth, amid a prolonged winless streak for the club. 9 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/wayne-rooney-criticizes-manchester-united-players-after-bournemouth-defeat ### 2026-10-22: Wayne Rooney criticizes Manchester United players and leadership Wayne Rooney has slammed Manchester United players as “selfish” and “babies” following a heavy Champions League loss, citing a breakdown in dressing room discipline and accountability. 10 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/wayne-rooney-criticizes-manchester-united-players-and-leadership --- Cite as: Wayne Rooney criticism of Manchester United.
