West African nations are pursuing initiatives to increase domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce reliance on imported medical goods.

In Ghana, the government is planning a pharmaceutical industrial park in the Shai-Osudoku District as part of its ‘24-Hour Economy’ initiative. The project aims to create an ecosystem for producing medicines, medical devices, and herbal products by providing essential infrastructure to attract domestic and international manufacturers. The development is expected to support up to 20,000 people within its first five years.

Similarly, Nigeria has set a target to achieve 70 per cent local production of medicines. This objective is being highlighted through the upcoming 8th Nigeria Pharma Manufacturers Expo in Lagos. The initiative aligns with the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), which focuses on strengthening domestic value chains and facilitating technology transfer to position the country as a major pharmaceutical hub in Africa.
