Sources: 16. Developments: 2. West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers (QPR) played to a 1-1 draw in an EFL Championship fixture at the London Stadium. The match was defined by significant officiating controversy involving referee Ruebyn Ricardo. In the 18th minute, Ricardo awarded QPR a penalty following a challenge by Tomas Soucek on Paul Smyth; however, replays indicated the tackle occurred outside the penalty area and that Soucek had made contact with the ball first. Nicolas Madsen converted the penalty to give QPR the lead. While West Ham struggled with midfield control in the first half, Jarrod Bowen scored an equalizer in the 70th minute. West Ham was denied a late victory in stoppage time when QPR goalkeeper Pierce Charles performed a crucial double save, first blocking a penalty from Bowen and then parrying a follow-up attempt from Arne Engels. The result leaves West Ham unable to ascend to the top of the Championship table and has sparked intense debate regarding the absence of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the league. Observers and fans have characterized the early penalty decision as one of the worst of the season. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: West Ham and QPR draw 1-1 amid officiating controversy West Ham and QPR drew 1-1 in a controversial Championship match, highlighted by a disputed penalty awarded to QPR and a late double save by goalkeeper Pierce Charles to deny West Ham the win. 11 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/west-ham-held-to-1-1-draw-by-qpr-at-london-stadium ### 2026-10-07: West Ham United hosts Queens Park Rangers in Championship clash West Ham United hosts Queens Park Rangers at the London Stadium in the EFL Championship, with manager Nuno Espírito Santo demanding a stronger start following recent performances. 9 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/english-football-previews-west-ham-united-and-charlton-athletic-fixtures --- Cite as: West Ham and QPR draw 1-1 amid officiating controversy.
