Warsaw is experiencing a significant surge in the wild boar population, with animals increasingly appearing in densely populated urban areas such as Praga-Południe and Śródmieście. While the population was estimated at approximately 3,031 animals in 2025, more recent estimates place the number between 3,000 and 7,000 individuals.

This expansion has led to heightened safety risks. Human attacks rose from 59 recorded incidents in 2024 to 121 in 2025, and have reached nearly 160 reported attacks in the most recent period. Road collisions have also escalated sharply, growing from 95 in 2022 to 341 in the most recent year. Resident complaints have surged from 423 in 2020 to approximately 15,000 in 2026.

Management is complicated by legal and biological constraints. Due to European Union regulations concerning African Swine Fever (ASF), authorities are restricted from relocating boars to other regions. Furthermore, there are currently no approved contraceptive methods for wild boars available in Poland or the EU.

Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski has stated that while resident safety is the priority, culling is a “difficult and uncomfortable process.” Currently, 98 percent of interventions focus on scaring and capturing the animals. A specialized team has been tasked with proposing legislative changes, as the Mayor emphasized that existing laws do not provide large cities with sufficient tools to manage the situation.
