In late August 2026, two separate fires broke out in the commune of Ecoche in the Loire region. These blazes burned approximately 15 hectares of meadows and undergrowth and threatened residential properties before being contained by emergency responders using helicopters and 118 firefighters.

By early September, a significant vegetation fire struck Vaugneray in the Rhône department. This blaze reached heights of 25 meters, destroying 25 hectares of vegetation and one uninhabited secondary residence. The fire, which led to the evacuation of six people, was exacerbated by heatwave conditions. While authorities noted the fire might have been triggered by brush-cutting work, arson has not been ruled out, particularly following a pattern of suspicious fires in the area.

On September 4, wildfires spread across several other French regions. In the Aude department, a major fire in Puilaurens burned approximately 225 hectares. Due to steep terrain, high temperatures, and wind, the blaze remained uncontained, prompting the evacuation of roughly thirty residents and the Puilaurens Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over 330 firefighters and 100 vehicles, supported by aerial assets, were deployed to the site.

In Ardèche, a fire between Les Vans and Malbosc burned about 50 hectares over three days, with officials remaining cautious of reignition risks. Additionally, a four-hectare fire in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Côte-d’Or, was extinguished by sixty firefighters, and a tractor fire in Offekerque was contained after destroying a load of flax.
