In Villetta Barrea, new safety regulations were implemented following several deer attacks that injured visitors. Mayor Giuseppina Colantoni issued an ordinance mandating specific distances from deer and prohibiting behaviors such as feeding or chasing animals for photos. Violators face fines, and the park suggests the aggression may be linked to the mating season. Concurrently, the park is addressing legal and preventative measures regarding Marsican brown bears. A court in Avezzano ordered the park to pay over 184,000 euros in compensation to a family following a 2017 incident where a bear entered their home. The ruling cited a failure to follow management protocols. To mitigate future risks, the LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors project has initiated efforts in Villetta Barrea to collect fallen fruit, reducing food sources that attract bears into populated areas. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-18: Abruzzo National Park faces legal ruling and mitigation efforts over bear encounters An Italian court ordered the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park to pay over 184,000 euros to a family after a bear entered their home, while volunteers work to reduce bear attractions in Villetta Barrea. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/abruzzo-national-park-faces-legal-ruling-and-mitigation-efforts-over-bear-encounters ### 2026-09-24: Villetta Barrea implements deer safety rules after attacks Authorities in Villetta Barrea, Italy, have imposed fines of up to 500 euros and strict distance rules following several deer attacks on tourists in the Abruzzo National Park. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/villetta-barrea-implements-fines-for-approaching-deer --- Cite as: Wildlife management in Abruzzo National Park.
