Authorities at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa have intercepted multiple attempts to smuggle endangered wildlife. In July 2026, a 23-year-old Thai national was caught with 418 parrot eggs. This was followed by an August 2026 incident where a 50-year-old Thai national was apprehended while attempting to export 50 bird eggs concealed in a homemade incubator bag. 

The eggs are believed to be protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Some of the rescued eggs have already hatched. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment David Maynier stated that these incidents demonstrate the “increasing sophistication of transnational wildlife trafficking networks.” Suspects face potential prison sentences of up to 10 years.
