Researchers are raising alarms regarding the stability of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin in East Antarctica, noting its potential to raise global sea levels by three to four metres if the ice melts completely.

Initial calls from an international research team emphasized the need for an urgent, multimillion-dollar expedition to investigate the region. Scientists highlighted that while West Antarctica has traditionally been the primary focus of climate concern, the East Antarctic ice sheet is increasingly vulnerable. The Cook Glacier, a primary component of the basin, has been thinning at an accelerating rate since the 1990s, discharging roughly 40 billion tonnes of ice annually.

A study published in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment reinforced these concerns, detailing how the basin’s geography—with bedrock sitting as deep as 2,000 metres below sea level—makes it susceptible to marine ice sheet instability. Professor Matt King of the University of Tasmania noted that because the area is hidden beneath thick ice, researchers must rely on satellite and radar data. He described the basin as ‘arguably the last unexplored place in Antarctica,’ citing a lack of in situ seafloor mapping and limited oceanographic data as major obstacles to predicting melting thresholds. Experts warn that as warmer seawater infiltrates beneath the ice, it could trigger a self-sustaining melting process.
