In mid‑April 2026 a massive blaze tore through Sabah, Malaysia, destroying hundreds of stilt‑homes and forcing thousands to flee, with firefighting efforts hampered by strong winds. A few weeks later, a separate wind‑driven fire struck Lowell, Massachusetts, burning six houses, displacing about 40 residents and injuring two firefighters, prompting a community aid response. By mid‑May, Malaysian emergency crews were again in the spotlight, rescuing a student from a fire in Selangor and confronting a deadly house fire in Sabah that resulted in the death of a disabled teenager, underscoring the ongoing threat of wind‑fueled residential fires in the region.
