Wizz Air has abandoned its long-haul flight strategy, leading to a significant reduction in its Airbus A321XLR fleet. The airline originally planned to operate 47 of these aircraft to facilitate expansion into the Middle East, but has since reduced its order to 11 units, converting 36 commitments into standard A321neo aircraft.

This strategic shift follows the closure of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operations. The airline determined that the A321XLR models no longer fit its business model because they are heavier than the standard A321neo and require longer refueling times, which conflicts with the carrier’s rapid turnaround requirements.

Currently, several A321XLR aircraft are grounded or not in regular commercial use, with some stored in Poland. To maintain its conventional fleet, Wizz Air has been removing Pratt & Whitney engines from grounded A321XLRs to support A321neo aircraft that are also grounded due to ongoing engine issues.
