The Women’s Rugby League World Cup began with England securing a 70-6 victory over Wales in their Group A opener in Perth. The match featured a record-equalling performance by Isabel Rowe, who scored 26 points, and hat-tricks from Anna Davies and Connie Boyd. Despite an early setback where Wales' Paige Travis scored the Welsh side's first-ever World Cup try following English errors, England responded with 13 total tries. Other scorers included Amelia Brown, Georgia Wilson, Hollie-Mae Dodd, and Jasmin Strange.

Amidst the tournament kickoff, Catherine, Princess of Wales, issued a personal message of support via social media to the England men’s, women’s, and wheelchair rugby league teams. The Princess, who has served as a patron of English rugby since February 2022, wished the players and staff luck as they compete in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. Her message was signed with a “C”, a convention used by the Palace to indicate a personal communication.

In related developments, the England men’s wheelchair rugby league team is preparing to defend their World Cup title. As the number-one ranked side, the team will begin their campaign in Wollongong, Australia, against Wales. To prepare for the tournament, coach Tom Coyd noted the team completed seven two-day training camps this year to ensure readiness for group stage matches against Wales, the USA, and Ireland.
