The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and the Indonesia Gastronomy Network launched the Wonderful Indonesia Gastronomy (WIG) 2026 program, themed ‘From Local Roots to Global Recognition’. The initiative aims to leverage culinary heritage to drive tourism, noting that 58.34 percent of foreign tourists engaged in food-related tourism in 2025. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana officially opened the event on September 26, 2026, at Pura Mangkunegaran in Solo, Central Java. Running through October 4, the program uses Solo and Yogyakarta as primary hubs to showcase Javanese culture, including palace traditions and contemporary culinary developments. To increase international visibility, the Ministry invited 18 media representatives and tastemakers from organizations such as Forbes Travel Guide, La Liste, The World’s 50 Best, and CNN International. On October 2, the WIG Talks 2026 forum was held at the Grand Hotel De Djokja in Yogyakarta. The forum brought together government officials, industry players, chefs, academics, and local communities, with attendance exceeding the target of 300 people. The event featured 22 speakers across five discussion sessions and a book review session. Minister Wardhana stated the goal is to “transform Indonesian culinary heritage into a global narrative,” using food to encourage regional travel and sustainable economic benefits for local residents. Concurrent with the forum, an Artisan Market was held from October 2–4, featuring 21 tenants from the Joglosemar region and Jakarta. The market showcased local products such as aromatic rice, spices, artisan cheeses, traditional herbal medicine (jamu), coffee, and organic coconut sugar. Expanding on these efforts, the Ministry launched the Wonderful Indonesia Scale-up Hub (WISH) 2026 program to enhance the competitiveness and market access of local tourism operators. Focusing on gastronomy, wellness, and heritage tourism, the program provides training, mentoring, and business matching.
