Following WWE’s acquisition of the Mexican wrestling promotion Lucha Libre AAA in April 2025, the brand has seen significant audience growth. WWE President Nick Khan attributed this expansion to intentional strategies, such as making AAA content available on YouTube outside of Mexico and Latin America.

AAA executive Dorian Roldán has provided further insight into the acquisition, revealing that discussions between the two organizations began as early as 2010. Roldán stated the sale was driven by a desire to fulfill the vision of AAA founder Antonio Peña to make Mexican wrestling a global attraction. He noted that while previous attempts to expand through Hollywood partnerships with figures such as MGM, Robert Rodriguez, and Mark Burnett faced obstacles in reaching the desired scale, the WWE deal provides access to superior production, talent, design, and merchandising platforms.

Roldán indicated that leveraging the scale and business volume of the world’s largest wrestling company allows the brand to reach a worldwide audience, even if it requires “stepping back from total brand independence.”

Since the acquisition, AAA has increased its mainstream presence through international broadcast deals with FOX and has held shows in various United States arenas, including Las Vegas and Rosemont, Illinois. AAA was recently named ‘Organization of the Year’ by Sports Illustrated México, recognizing its international impact. This recognition follows a major year for the promotion, including the Triplemanía 34 event held in both Las Vegas and Mexico City, and a high-profile mask vs. mask match in Monterrey featuring El Grande Americano and WWE wrestler Chad Gable.
