The rivalry between CM Punk and Kevin Owens escalated following tensions regarding the Undisputed WWE Championship. On October 30, WWE announced that the two competitors would face each other in a No Holds Barred match during the November 6 episode of SmackDown, a stipulation that allows the use of weapons and fighting outside the ring.

On November 4, reports emerged that WWE official Shawn Michaels ordered Kevin Owens to leave the Performance Center in Orlando to prevent a confrontation with CM Punk. Owens, who stated he was at the facility for shoulder medical treatment, shared video of the encounter. Michaels reportedly intervened because Punk was scheduled to be at the building for an NXT championship match, stating the rivals could not be in the same facility due to their ongoing feud.

On the November 6 episode of SmackDown at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Kevin Owens defeated CM Punk in their scheduled No Holds Barred match. The contest involved the use of chairs, tables, and a steel chain. Owens secured the victory by countering a GTS attempt with a chain-wrapped punch, serving as the final buildup to the Crown Jewel event.
