WWE has transitioned toward a more patient talent development model under its current management. According to veteran performer JBL, the front office now provides a longer developmental leash for newcomers transitioning from the Performance Center and NXT, a departure from the Vince McMahon era where talent faced termination for minor errors.

JBL linked this shift to a global streaming strategy that reduces reliance on traditional North American pay-per-view metrics. 

In defending these practices, JBL noted that the company utilizes long-term developmental contracts to mitigate the financial risks associated with training large classes of recruits. He argued that because much of the investment is lost when prospects do not reach the main roster, it is a logical business practice to ‘lock them in’ to ensure the company recovers its costs once a talent becomes profitable.
