The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) announced the WY22 SAFE PASS program, a safety initiative for Teton Pass. Beginning in October 2026, drivers of recreational vehicles (RVs), motorists towing trailers, and operators of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating exceeding 10,000 pounds are required to complete an online mountain safety self-certification.

The certification involves an online review of topics such as steep grades, brake fade, and load limits. Once completed, the certification is valid for one year and must be renewed annually.

Upon implementation, failure to comply with the program may result in penalties. Drivers exceeding the 10,000-pound limit without certification or those violating the 60,000-pound permanent weight restriction may face misdemeanor charges and fines of up to $750 or $1,000, respectively.
