Initially, Asani was omitted from the Albania national team squad for UEFA Nations League matches despite his recent goal-scoring form with Esteghlal. Asani responded to the exclusion with social media posts, stating, “For now I will remain silent, because I know myself,” and “History is never forgotten.” Following his club performance, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) intervened in a legal dispute regarding Asani’s eligibility to play for Esteghlal FC. Several Iranian clubs, including Persepolis and Sepahan, filed complaints questioning the legality of his participation. The AFC has requested documentation from the Football Federation of Iran regarding his contract termination and registration during transfer window restrictions. While Persepolis management has suggested escalating the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), legal analysts have noted that Asani’s status as a previously registered player might protect Esteghlal from certain disciplinary penalties. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: AFC demands documentation on Yaser Asani's eligibility for Esteghlal The AFC has requested urgent documentation from the Iranian Football Federation regarding Yaser Asani's eligibility to play for Esteghlal FC following complaints from rival clubs like Persepolis. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/afc-demands-documentation-on-yaser-asanis-eligibility-for-esteghlal ### 2026-09-19: Yaser Asani omitted from Albania national team squad Esteghlal star Yaser Asani was excluded from Albania's 29-man squad for the UEFA Nations League despite his recent goal-scoring form in Iran and Asia. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/yaser-asani-omitted-from-albania-national-team-squad --- Cite as: Yaser Asani eligibility and selection controversy.
