Following initial suspicions of intentionality raised by YCRT interventor Pablo Gordillo—who reported finding an “extraño artefacto” (strange device) on the tracks—and ATE Santa Cruz general secretary Carlos Garzón, who termed the event an “atentado” (attack), technical investigations have now confirmed indications of sabotage. Forensic analysis of the railway track and mechanical components revealed anomalies inconsistent with standard operational wear or spontaneous mechanical failure.

The derailment involved the company’s only functioning locomotive, which had recently completed nearly two months of repairs. This loss is expected to paralyze coal transportation for several months, resulting in an estimated economic loss of $10 million. 

Governor Claudio Vidal noted that the act threatens a significant coal sales contract intended to fund the purchase of two new locomotives.
