Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey underwent rehabilitation following two surgical procedures on his left ankle to address bone stress and ligamentous laxity. By late September 2026, Edey was medically cleared for on-court activity and was expected to be ready for the season opener on October 21.

General manager Zach Kleiman indicated that the team might be conservative with Edey’s preseason usage, though Edey expressed feeling “more athletic than ever” following his recovery. Despite a previous season limited to 11 games, Edey averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.

Following his recovery, the Memphis Grizzlies announced they would exercise the rookie scale team option for Edey for the 2027-28 season, valued at approximately $8.07 million. He will become eligible for a rookie scale extension in July 2027.

In early season play, Edey has demonstrated significant impact, including a performance against the Golden State Warriors where he recorded 10 rebounds and two blocks. During that game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr praised Edey’s defensive performance, though an incident occurred where Edey’s arm struck Brandin Podziemski in the head while defending a cut to the basket, causing Podziemski to leave the game.
