An international conference titled ‘The Anti-City Guide: Reindustrialization of Zenica and Preservation of Industrial Heritage’ examined how the city might navigate its transition by preserving historical identity while fostering sustainable development. The event drew comparisons to the Dutch city of Heerlen, discussing how abandoned infrastructure can be repurposed for modern needs. Building on these themes of transformation, plans have emerged to convert the former Zenica Steelworks site into a digital-innovation complex. This proposed project aims to host a data center, a supercomputer, and infrastructure for artificial intelligence development. The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina has funded a feasibility study by Arthur D. Little to assess the technical, energy, and financial requirements for the complex, which could eventually reach a capacity of up to 100 megawatts. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-04: Zenica Steelworks site planned for data center and AI hub The former Zenica Steelworks site is planned to become a digital-innovation complex featuring a data center, supercomputer, and AI development infrastructure. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/zenica-steelworks-site-planned-for-data-center-and-ai-hub ### 2026-09-29: Zenica hosts conference on industrial heritage and urban reindustrialization An international conference in Zenica explores preserving industrial heritage and urban reindustrialization, drawing comparisons to the transformation of the Dutch mining city Heerlen. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/zenica-hosts-conference-on-industrial-heritage-and-urban-reindustrialization --- Cite as: Zenica industrial transition and redevelopment.
