1. FC Kaiserslautern plans new youth stadium amid environmental concerns
1. FC Kaiserslautern (FCK) has proposed plans to construct a new stadium at its Fröhnerhof youth academy in Mehlingen. The project aims to provide a dedicated home for the club's U21 team, which recently earned promotion to the Regionalliga. According to DFB regulations, the new facility must accommodate at least 2,500 spectators, while FCK's development plan envisions a capacity for up to 5,000 visitors.
Club Managing Director Thomas Hengen stated that the current facilities have seen little change in 20 years and lack sufficient office space for coaches and locker rooms for players. He emphasized that upgrading the site is essential for attracting new talent.
However, the environmental group BUND has raised alarms regarding the development. Representatives from BUND Kaiserslautern expressed concerns that increased traffic, light, and noise pollution could displace local wildlife, including wildcats, bats, insects, lizards, and rare bird species living in the adjacent forest.
