1. FC Köln defeats TSG Hoffenheim in Bundesliga opener

1. FC Köln secured a 3-2 victory against TSG Hoffenheim in their Bundesliga season opener. Despite trailing twice during the match, Köln rallied in the second half to claim the win in front of 49,700 spectators.

Said El Mala, who recently extended his contract with the club until 2031 and was assigned the number 10 shirt, scored the equalizer in the 51st minute. New signing Thijs Dallinga secured the win with two goals in the 72nd and 82nd minutes. For Hoffenheim, Adam Daghim and Ozan Kabak provided the goals. Köln goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe also prevented a further deficit by saving a penalty from Max Moerstedt.

Following the match, former player Stephan Engels expressed caution regarding the pressure on El Mala, noting that the expectations surrounding his role and new jersey number could prove challenging during his second season. El Mala was substituted mid-way through the second half due to apparent cramping.
