Patras hospital reports recovery for boy rescued after near-drowning
A 10-year-old boy is showing signs of steady recovery after a near-drowning incident at Marathia beach in Ilia on August 28, 2026. Medical staff at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the University General Hospital of Patras reported that the child has been resuscitated and is demonstrating a positive neurological response.
The rescue involved a coordinated effort starting at the beach, where bystanders and a lifeguard performed immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The child was initially stabilized at Amaliada Hospital and later at Pyrgos Hospital before being transferred to Patras. Andreas Iliadis, head of the Pediatric ICU, noted that the medical team has successfully opened a critical ‘neurological window,’ allowing them to monitor the child’s consciousness and nervous system response.
Medical professionals expressed cautious optimism regarding the boy's ability to return home soon, despite the challenges posed by cerebral edema following the incident.
