100 Entertainment sues Universal Music Group over album promotion

100 Entertainment, the independent label owned by rapper The Game (Jayceon Terrell Taylor), has filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) and Virgin Music Group in a California state court. The suit alleges a breach of contract regarding the promotional budget for the 2022 album ‘Drillmatic: Heart vs. Mind’.

According to the complaint, the defendants pledged a $500,000 recoupable marketing budget but allegedly spent only $179,000. The lawsuit claims that over $320,000 remained unspent, including the entire $125,000 allocated for radio promotion. 100 Entertainment asserts that the lack of promised support, specifically in digital marketing and radio, led to the album’s ‘diminished commercial performance’.

Additionally, the label is seeking reimbursement for costs incurred to produce the music video for the single ‘Stupid’, featuring Big Sean, which it claims UMG has failed to repay. The plaintiff is seeking at least $500,000 in damages.
