11-year-old girl undergoes surgery after second-floor balcony fall
An 11-year-old girl has undergone surgery at the 108 Military Central Hospital after falling from a second-floor balcony in Vietnam. The accident occurred when the child stood on the balcony to look down after hearing a doorbell, causing her to slip and fall.
Medical examinations revealed multiple severe injuries, including fractures to the right orbital roof, the lateral walls of both eye sockets, the nasal bone, and a Le Fort II maxillary fracture. The child also sustained damage to the right optic nerve and a fracture in the lower third of her left radius. Following initial emergency care at Viet Duc University Hospital, she was transferred to the National Hospital of Ophthalmology and subsequently to the 108 Military Central Hospital.
Surgeons performed a procedure to realign the fractured bone fragments, stabilize the upper jaw, and restore the bite using anchor screws and tension bands. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Manh noted that the surgical goal was to ensure stable fixation and functional recovery. Medical professionals are advising families to secure balconies, windows, and stairs, keep floors dry, and ensure no furniture is placed near railings that could facilitate climbing.
