11-year-old rescued from challenging Styria via ferrata

An 11‑year‑old boy from the Graz‑Umgebung district was rescued unharmed after becoming exhausted on a very difficult D‑grade section of the Bürgeralm‑Panoramaklettersteig in Aflenz, Styria. The boy was on his first outdoor climb, accompanied by two 36‑year‑old relatives. Although the party had planned to use a safety exit before the hardest stretch, they continued when the child felt fit, and he soon could no longer climb or re‑attach his via ferrata carabiners.

The group secured the boy on a steel rope, called for help, and mountain rescue teams from Bergrettung Aflenz and the Alpine police arrived around 13:30 to lower him safely. No injuries were reported. The Styria Alpine police reiterated the importance of thorough route planning, appropriate equipment, and realistic assessment of physical abilities for safe mountain activities.
