12th International Music Festival of Marvão kicks off with Hong Kong Sinfonietta

The 12th International Music Festival of Marvão is underway in the Portuguese municipality of Marvão. The opening concert features the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, directed by Maestro Christoph Poppen, and includes performances by harmonica virtuoso Cy Leo, jazz pianist Daniel Chu, baritone Rafael Fingerlos and trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich. The concert takes place among the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ammaia.

The festival’s programme also includes a closing gala that highlights historical reenactments, such as the 1497 royal marriage between King Manuel I of Portugal and Infanta Isabel of Castile, staged in the nearby town of Valencia de Alcántara. Additional cultural events run alongside the music performances, including film screenings and a book presentation as part of the broader Periferias cultural calendar.
