Man dies after ingesting rodent poison, autopsy under strict safety protocols in Lučenec, Slovakia

On 5 August 2026, a 63‑year‑old man was found dead in a locked house in Lučenec, Slovakia. Police suspect he ingested the rodenticide Fosfotoxín, which releases phosphine gas when it contacts water or humidity.

The body was transferred to the Lučenec hospital for autopsy. The examination was carried out under strict safety measures, with civil‑protection units, a chemical‑lab monitoring team, firefighters in protective gear, forced ventilation and full decontamination. Officials explained that phosphine attacks the nervous, digestive and cardiovascular systems and can cause nausea, headache, breathing difficulties and death.
