130 Malaysians face potential prosecution in Pakistan
Approximately 130 Malaysian citizens detained in Pakistan for suspected involvement in cyber fraud call center operations may face legal prosecution under Pakistani law. The arrests followed a raid by Pakistan's National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency at KASA Tower in Rawalpindi.
Malaysian Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail, stated that authorities are working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Pakistani security agencies to conduct detailed profile reviews of the individuals. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the detainees are victims of human trafficking who were deceived into working in the country, or if they intentionally participated in criminal activities for financial gain.
Initial findings from Pakistani authorities suggest the call center was used to defraud people via phone and video calls by impersonating bank officials and police officers. The syndicate allegedly used intimidation tactics, claiming victims were involved in money laundering, to coerce them into transferring funds via e-wallets to be converted into cryptocurrency.
While some detainees reportedly hold valid visas, others may have expired documentation. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is currently awaiting a complete list of identities from Pakistani authorities and may send officers to Pakistan to gather further information.
