13‑year‑old stolen Opel recovered from Danube in Hungary

A 2013 theft of an Opel Corsa belonging to retired mechanic Imre Pásztor in the Hungarian town of Szob was resolved when the vehicle resurfaced in the Danube after an unusually low water level. Municipal firefighters from Vámosmikola and volunteer crews from Nagymaros secured the submerged car, lifted it onto the riverbank and handed it over to police. Inside the wreckage officials recovered several dozen fish that had taken shelter, as well as the owner’s bag containing his wallet.

Pásztor, who identified the car by its licence plates, said the discovery evoked strong emotions and that the vehicle had been a vital work tool. Police had closed the theft investigation a month after the crime was reported, having never identified the perpetrators. The owner now faces the cost of removing the wreckage from the riverbank.
