14 Nigerien security personnel killed in coordinated terrorist attack near N’Guigmi, Diffa Region

At about 9:30 a.m. on Friday, heavily armed gunmen stormed a National Guard post near the cemetery in N’Guigmi, Diffa Region, southeastern Niger. The assault was followed by a well‑coordinated ambush on reinforcements about one kilometre south of the position, resulting in the deaths of 14 security personnel – ten soldiers of the Niger Armed Forces (including an officer) and four members of the National Guard. Four National Guard members were injured, one critically, and a military vehicle was destroyed.

The identities of the attackers were not confirmed, but the Diffa Region has experienced repeated attacks by extremist groups operating around the Lake Chad Basin. Nigerien authorities have not issued an official statement, but security operations were reported to have been intensified around N’Guigmi to locate those responsible.
