Kogi State police rescue 11 NYSC members after highway bus attack
On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, armed gunmen attacked two commercial buses along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in the Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The attackers emerged from the bush near the Ogene Zaria/Onicha-Igo Junction, blocking vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
The victims, primarily members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II, were traveling from their orientation camp in Bayelsa State toward Abuja. While reports on the total number of abductees vary between 15 and 16, the Kogi State Police Command confirmed that a joint security operation successfully rescued 11 individuals, including the drivers of a white Peace Mass Transit Hummer bus and a yellow 18-seater bus.
Security forces have launched ongoing bush-combing operations in the surrounding forest to locate the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators. The incident has sparked significant public concern regarding the safety of young Nigerians traveling for mandatory national service.
