Santiago Herrero in Villa Carlos Paz recovers after brutal bottle attack

On July 9 2026, 15‑year‑old Santiago Herrero was assaulted in the centre of Villa Carlos Paz, Córdoba, when a group of youths struck him from behind with a glass bottle. The blow caused a severe skull depression, a brain fissure and multiple hematomas. He was first taken to Hospital Municipal Gumersindo Sayago and then transferred to the Hospital de Urgencias in Córdoba for emergency neurosurgery.

Medical reports initially gave a reserved prognosis, but subsequent updates indicated a favourable evolution: Santiago responded to medication, began moving his hands and feet, opened his eyes and doctors started to reduce sedation while planning further CT scans to monitor recovery.

Police investigations led to the arrest of three suspects – an 18‑year‑old male and two minors – after raids in Estancia Vieja and Villa Carlos Paz, with five mobile phones seized as evidence. The case is being handled by the Fiscalía de Instrucción of Villa Carlos Paz, prosecutor Jorgelina Gómez, who is reviewing security‑camera footage.

The victim’s mother, María Laura Tamagnone, says the incident was not a fight but a surprise assault. She has called for justice and the local community has organized prayers for Santiago’s recovery.
