India says 16 nationals dead, 75 injured in West Asia war
The Indian government reported that 16 Indian nationals have been killed in the West Asia conflict that began earlier this year, including 10 seafarers. The deaths occurred in Saudi Arabia (1), Kuwait (2), Oman (8), Iraq (1) and the United Arab Emirates (4). A further 75 Indians were injured – 32 in the UAE, 24 in Oman, 4 in Qatar, 13 in Kuwait, 1 in Saudi Arabia and 1 in Israel.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh told the Rajya Sabha this information in response to a question from CPI(M) MP John Brittas. The government is providing ex‑gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the seafarers killed under the DGMA Welfare Scheme, and additional war‑zone compensation of Rs 12 lakh for officers and Rs 10 lakh for crew through the Maritime Union of India and the National Union of Seafarers of India.
The Ministry also noted a separate, non‑conflict accident at the Ras Laffan gas plant in Qatar that killed 12 Indian nationals. Indian diplomatic missions have assisted families, facilitated the repatriation of remains and arranged medical treatment for the injured.
