18 Fatal Road Collisions in Quebec During Construction Holiday

Eighteen people were killed in fifteen road collisions over a two‑week period during Quebec's construction holiday, according to a joint report by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) and the Association des directeurs de police du Québec (ADPQ). The death toll represents a decline from the previous year, when 25 people died on provincial roads and five more on recreational routes, but it remains the highest fatality count in a decade for the SQ‑patrolled network.

Motorcyclists were involved in six of the fifteen crashes, and preliminary analysis found that at least one human factor contributed to every incident. The agencies identified excessive speed, driver distraction and impaired driving as the primary causes. Inspector‑Chief Jonathan Menard emphasized the collective responsibility for road safety, urging motorists to adopt safe and responsible driving behaviours as travel continues in the coming weeks.
