Consultative Shipping Group warns of global maritime trade fragmentation
The Consultative Shipping Group (CSG), representing 18 maritime nations and roughly one-fifth of global shipping tonnage, has issued a major warning regarding the fragmentation of international maritime trade. The group stated that the industry is facing a structural shift caused by geopolitical conflicts, contested chokepoints, and the rapid expansion of an unregulated “shadow fleet” that operates outside standard insurance and safety frameworks.
These disruptions, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and Middle East conflicts, threaten to create a two-tier shipping system. This fragmentation could undermine global supply chain resilience, increase business costs, and impact food and energy security. The CSG called for the consistent application of international rules and greater transparency to protect the stability of the global economy, which relies on sea transport for over 80% of its trade volume.
In the Middle East, U.S. forces have been assisting with the transit of oil through the Strait of Hormuz to mitigate disruptions. According to Centcom, forces have assisted approximately 1,300 vessels since early May, helping to transport an estimated 7 million barrels of oil per day, though this remains significantly below pre-war levels of 20 million barrels per day.
