Director of Doenitz academy detained in Dafne Zapata femicide investigation

In July 2026, 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata Quintos died during a summer camp at the Marina Doenitz militarized academy in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas. An autopsy determined the cause of death as asphyxia by immersion (drowning) and the Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de Tamaulipas opened a femicide investigation.

Multiple arrests followed. The first detainee was 18‑year‑old auxiliary Danna Yanina, identified as an auxiliary student. On 25‑26 July, the academy’s director, Jorge Luis Ponce Ortega (also reported as Jorge Luis “N”), was captured in Altamira and placed under judicial custody. Staff member Estrella “Estrellita” Mora was also taken into custody. The government agency Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) publicly stated it has no authority over or relationship with the Doenitz academy. The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) clarified that militarized education is not authorized for basic‑level schools. The case has sparked public protests, demands for justice from Dafne’s family, and ongoing judicial hearings, while the academy remains closed pending investigation.
