Dafne Zapata murder case: Danna Yanina detained as investigation widens

In July 2026 a 13‑year‑old girl, Dafne Zapata Quintos, died during a summer camp at the private militarized academy Marina Doenitz in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas. Autopsies confirmed death by asphyxia from submersion and the case was opened under the femicide protocol.

The first person charged is 18‑year‑old Danna Yanina, a former student and assistant at the academy. A judge ordered preventive detention and placed her in the Centro de Ejecución de Sanciones in Altamira. Yanina’s defense argues she was also a victim of illegal detention and abuse by staff, especially a woman known as “Estrellita”.

Dafna’s mother, Alejandra Quintos, has demanded that four additional persons be detained, saying the investigation must hold all those present accountable. The Fiscalía de Tamaulipas continues to investigate the entire academy staff, and forensic examinations have reinforced the asphyxia finding.

The case has prompted political responses: the Senate announced a review of regulations for private militarized schools, while the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) reiterated that basic education cannot be militarized and that the academy operates outside federal authority. Mexico City President Claudia Sheinbaum said the state of Tamaulipas bears responsibility. The controversy has sparked national debate over the legality and safety of militarized schooling.
