18-year-old sets fire to home in Sinop, Brazil, endangering newborn

An 18‑year‑old man was arrested after deliberately igniting his family house in the Jardim Novo Estado neighborhood of Sinop, Brazil, on Thursday afternoon. Using a can of thinner and a lighter, he set the home ablaze, causing total destruction of the property. Police and the Military Fire Department intervened; the suspect was apprehended at the scene.

The fire threatened the lives of his 23‑year‑old sister and her 26‑day‑old baby, who were sleeping in a bedroom at the time. The infant was rescued by the mother and handed to a neighbor. The suspect claimed a dispute with his father earlier that day motivated the act, although he later admitted the baby’s presence was unknown to him. He was taken to the police station, where he was placed in handcuffs due to flight risk and for safety of others.
