1879 Quintuple Stella gold coin to be auctioned by Heritage

Heritage Auctions will feature a rare 1879 Liberty Head Quintuple Stella in its upcoming ANA U.S. Coins Signature Auction, scheduled from August 31 through September 5, 2026. The coin, graded PR64+ Deep Cameo by PCGS, is part of the Bob R. Simpson Collection and is identified as the finest-certified example of its kind.

Only five known examples of the $20 Quintuple Stella exist. Four are held in private hands, while the fifth is part of the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. The coin was part of a 19th-century experimental effort to create U.S. gold coinage based on metric standards to facilitate international commerce.

In addition to the Quintuple Stella, the auction will include a unique 1876 Liberty double eagle (Judd-1490, Pollock-1643) and three $4 Stellas from the Costa Family Collection.
