187th Fighter Wing tests F-35A readiness in Alabama

The 187th Fighter Wing, known as the ‘Red Tails’, conducted Operation Tuskegee Thunder from August 12 to 14 at Dannelly Field in Alabama. The exercise was designed to validate the unit's combat readiness for potential deployment to the Pacific theater.

During the simulation, pilots and personnel faced high-pressure scenarios including simulated chemical attacks, drone strikes, communication failures, and casualties. These obstacles required the wing to adapt strategies in real-time and utilize backup command and control methods when primary systems failed.

The exercise marks the successful transition of the unit to the F-35A Lightning II platform. Colonel John D. Caldwell, commander of the wing, stated that while the F-35 is an elite platform, true readiness depends on the ability of personnel to operate under extreme stress. The training aimed to refine tactical procedures and build the confidence necessary for global deployment in contested environments.
