1933 Double Eagle gold coins to be exhibited in Pittsburgh

Eleven legendary 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coins will be exhibited together for the first time at the World’s Fair of Money in Pittsburgh. Organized by the American Numismatic Association (ANA), the event runs from August 25 to 29.

These coins, which have a nominal value of 20 dollars, are among the most famous items in numismatics. Although 445,500 Double Eagles were produced in Philadelphia in 1933, they were never officially released into circulation due to changes in U.S. monetary policy during the Great Depression. While most were intended to be melted into gold bullion, several escaped the mint. Some were discovered decades later, and following legal processes, certain specimens have been monetized for private ownership. The 11 coins currently owned by the U.S. federal government serve as the main attraction of this year's fair.
