Hungary commemorates 70th anniversary of 1956 Revolution

Hungary is preparing extensive commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. Prime Minister Péter Magyar has called for citizens to gather at Kossuth Square on October 23 to celebrate national freedom. The government has also announced plans to establish a new museum dedicated to the 1956 events to honor the martyrs and heroes of the struggle.

In Budapest, the anniversary will involve significant public events, including a torchlight procession starting from the Technical University and a formal ceremony at the Parliament. Due to these events, major traffic closures are expected on Andrássy Avenue and near Kossuth Square, with BKK advising the use of metro and tram lines. High-profile international guests, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, are expected to attend.

Regional commemorations are also taking place across Hungary and neighboring areas. In Győr, programs include historical lectures, film screenings, and guided walks. In Oradea, Romania, a torchlight procession and wreath-laying are planned. Additionally, a bust of martyr Prime Minister Imre Nagy was unveiled in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, as part of the anniversary observances.
