1968 Bullitt Mustang Restored After Decades in Mexico

An authentic 1968 Ford Mustang GT that starred as Steve McQueen’s hero car in the film “Bullitt” was recovered from prolonged exposure in a Baja California scrapyard in Mexico. Restoration specialists verified the vehicle’s identity using the original VIN (8R02S125559) and studio build sheets, confirming unique film‑specific modifications such as camera mounts and trunk sound‑equipment housings.

The car had suffered severe rust, floorboard damage, and interior deterioration after years of outdoor storage. Conservators prioritized structural stabilization while preserving the original paint patina, glass, and interior components, opting for a preservation‑first approach rather than a full cosmetic rebuild. The restored Mustang underscores its iconic status in automotive and cinema history, famous for the ten‑minute San Francisco chase that set a benchmark for action filmmaking.

The project reflects collaboration between Ford Motor Company archives, automotive historians, and heritage preservation experts to return the cultural artifact to public display.
