1980s Video Game Classics Rampage and Early RPGs Spotlighted
The 1986 arcade title Rampage, created by Bally Midway, let up to three players control giant monsters—a giant ape, a giant lizard and a werewolf—to demolish cityscapes while fending off military forces. Designer Brian Colin cited classic monster films such as King Kong and the works of Willis O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen as inspirations. The game launched a multimedia franchise that later included home console versions, sequels, compilations and a Hollywood movie.
In the role‑playing genre, Strategic Simulations Inc.’s 1988 release Pool of Radiance introduced the “Gold Box” engine that translated Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules to a computer format, becoming the first entry in a successful series that paved the way for early online multiplayer experiences. Another 1987 milestone, Dungeon Master from FTL Games, offered a first‑person, real‑time dungeon crawl with skill‑based leveling and a spell‑crafting system, influencing later RPG franchises such as The Elder Scrolls.
