1Password faces backlash over $300,000 Linux project donation

1Password is facing significant backlash from both customers and employees following a $300,000 donation to Omacom, a nonprofit foundation that oversees the Omarchy Linux distribution. The project was created by Danish entrepreneur David Heinemeier Hansson, also known as DHH, who has a history of publishing controversial and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Critics on social media have accused the company of supporting extremist views, with some viral posts claiming the donation implies support for the ethnic cleansing of Europe. Internally, the company has experienced friction, with employees expressing disappointment over the affiliation.

In response to the controversy, 1Password CEO David Faugno and cofounder Roustem Karimov issued internal messages addressing the concerns. Karimov addressed staff regarding the polarizing nature of the situation, noting that while many employees hold strong moral objections to Hansson’s comments, the company must navigate differing personal opinions within its workforce.
