1Password launches Privileged Access to limit permanent AI agent credentials

1Password introduced Privileged Access, a new solution that grants engineers and AI agents one‑time access to critical infrastructure and automatically revokes it after the task is completed. The product expands the company's unified access platform into privileged‑access management, a capability added in June when 1Password acquired Apono Inc. Privileged Access uses Apono’s just‑in‑time provisioning technology, writing permissions directly into the native policy layer of cloud environments, databases and Kubernetes, so credentials never leave the system.

A recent 1Password study found that 40 % of developers give agents persistent access, creating invisible exposure that often goes undetected until an attack occurs. CEO David Faugno said most organizations have more permanent access than they can see or justify. The solution records every request and approval, supporting compliance with standards such as ISO 27001, PCI‑DSS, GDPR and US health‑care regulations.
