1st Infantry Division soldiers deploy to Lithuania

Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, are deploying to Lithuania as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. This movement is a routine rotation intended to sustain the United States military presence on NATO’s eastern flank.

The incoming unit will replace the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced that the new rotation is already en route and is expected to be at least as large as the previous deployment, which consisted of more than 1,000 troops.

While U.S. European Command noted that the size and composition of rotations may vary based on training needs and equipment, the deployment maintains the continuous rotational posture established after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The presence aims to deter aggression amid reported Russian hybrid activities and airspace violations in the region.
