1st Laboratory Center of Volos requests urgent structural safety inspection

The director of the 1st Laboratory Center of Volos, Ioannis Tsokanakis, has requested an immediate structural integrity inspection of the school building following the suspension of laboratory classes. During a meeting on September 17 involving the Magnesia Secondary Education Directorate and local municipal representatives, Tsokanakis demanded a formal, written certification from specialized technical teams ensuring the entire facility is safe for use.

The school has faced persistent issues since 2012, including roof leaks that have damaged laboratory equipment and caused class interruptions. While waterproofing attempts were made in the past, water ingress returned between 2013 and 2014. Concerns regarding the corrosion of reinforcement steel led to previous requests for structural checks in 2023.

Although restoration work began on the western wing and corridor, these efforts were halted in April without explanation. The school administration is currently awaiting a response from Building Infrastructure authorities regarding the inspection request and is considering filing a report with the prosecutor. The administration also plans to provide updates to parents and guardians regarding the building's status and the timeline for necessary repairs, such as roof sealing and interior restoration.
